Sodium Lauryl Sulfate in toothpaste?!

Question:

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate in toothpaste?

Can this ingredient cause pain when brushing a child's teeth? My 3 year old says almost every toothpaste I get him is "too spicy" (it burns), and I noticed that the only toothpaste I can use with him is one that doesn't have that ingredient, like Zooth brand. The flavor doesn't matter either.

Answers:

I've noticed the same thing with my kids. I think you get used to the "burning" but for now, we'll continue with the Zooth brand. I don't want to make it a traumatic event and them not want to brush. SLS is what "lathers" the toothpaste when you brush and is a chemical that can be irritating to skin and mucosa so it's very possible that it is what is causing the burning.
