Braces Impressions?!

Question: I need braces. I am not scared at all for the pain of getting them on or for the pain of spacers or anything. My orthodontist told me about responsability and everything and I'm all for it all. There's just one thing holding me back: Impressions! I've heard different things from all of my friends. One said you keep them on for a minute, one said you keep them on for ten seconds. One friend said they threw up, one said it didn't bother them. Somebody please tell me what exactly happens! Is it unbearably uncomfortable? How long does it last? Will I throw up? Someone help!
Thanks in advance

This is actually not that bad at all. If you can handle the pain of braces and such, this is not a big deal. All they will do is stick a tray of putty like stuff in your mouth. Just breath through your nose and you will be fine. If you really want, ask them to do one tray at a time. There are two trays, one for your bottom and upper teeth. It will probably stay on for about 30 seconds to 1 minute, but breath through your nose and relax! You will not throw up, I promise. They take them out, and sometimes there will be leftover "goo" in your mouth. Just rinse a few times and brush. Really, you are worrying too much about this simple process. DONT WORRY!

Oh it's not THAT bad! Your friends are trying to scare you! All they do is take some goo - looks like play-doh, they put it in a tray and stick it up onto your teeth. Try not to think about it as they are doing it. Bring your iPod and sing along to all your songs in your head. They leave the tray in for about a minute then it comes out - pain free - and there is no residue on your teeth of the goo! You will be FINE!

it is quite uncomfortable so that is probably why people say they were on for so long. it isn't that long and is quite bearable. i don't want to scare you cause it isn't that bad but u no the way if your toothbrush it would nearly make you throw up? it iskinda like that kind of feeling but for a short time kinda. don't worry but it aint that bad like

The kind of experience you have with the dental impressions is mostly dependent on your gag reflex. When people say they felt like they were going to throw up, it's because they have a strong gag reflex, so the cement encasing the molars in the very back of their mouth triggered that reflex and freaked them out. I have a strong gag reflex (I gag when I brush my back teeth) so I HATE having impressions taken of my teeth, but I know that rationally it's not that bad. Basically, don't be stressed out about it, and if it DOES make you gag, it only lasts about 60 seconds.

it's not that bad but it does restrict your breathing airways for that amount of time they put the goo in your mouth. just make sure to look in the mirror after they take it out because when i got my impressions for my retainer after my braces i had the goo all over around my mouth and it was embarassing. it's not bad at all though just breathe slowly and stay calm

I have had my braces for three months. When I got my impressions, it is not painful or nothing like that. What it is is like your biting into silly putty for like a minute. They do your top teeth and your bottom teeth. They have different flavors, so that it wont taste so bad. I chose cherry. It is not bad at all. The dentist will probably just tell you to brush your teeth after it is done.

An impression is just a common thing we use in the office to make sure we have a model of your teeth to know exactly what procedures to preform on you...The impression material is called alginate and it sounds really nasty but its not...depending on how well they mix it or what type of alginate they use can either make it runny or just set in the tray...Most orthodontist use a fast setting alginate unlike your general dentist which nornally takes no longer than a minute to set up..First they try in the tray to make sure that it isnt to big and that they will get all of your teeth in the impression...Then the mixture of generally to scoops of alginate and water will make the mix place it your mouth and hold it there till it hardens...But its not like cement or brick hard its still soft just not moveable.....Sometimes if the mix is to runny or your molars are really far back it may trigger your gag raflex but thats nothing to be ashamed about...Remember we work with this everyday and sometime yes people do throw-up but its not from the material its their relfex.....Also some alginates leave a nasty after taste thats why we allow you to rinse your mouth after we take your impression!!!

They put a clay type substance on a metal plate that will fit your teeth and press it onto your teeth and let it dry for about a minute or two. Then they just pull of the metal and the clay comes off. Sometimes the metal plate has holes on bottom so the excess clay can come off. It doesn't bother me but everyone is different. All impressions do are they make a mold of your teeth so when you get your braces off you can see the difference. Also try going to youtube.com and look for a video of someone getting impressions. Good Luck! You probably wont regret braces.

Impressions? The molds of your teeth? Those are a piece of cake! It's soo easy! They just stick it in and it gets a shape of your teeth then they take it out and you wash your mouth out! I forgot the time cause I got it months ago and now I have braces which I got Thursday! People are different so I can't tell you that you wont throw up!

It's not that bad.
About 15 seconds - 1 minute, 30 seconds
You will not throw up!!!
