Why do retainers hurt and feels tight after not wearing for a few days?!

Question:

Why do retainers hurt and feels tight after not wearing for a few days?

I've worn retainers for about 1 year now, and when i take them off, and wear them back a few days later. it is tight and kind of hurts for a bit. does it mean my teeth moved when i didnt wear them? but after like 30 minutes the pain and tightness will disapear

Answers:

Yes, your teeth move slightly when you have your retainers out, so the tightness is the retainer pushing them back where they belong.

Your teeth probably aren't ready for you to have your retainers out for multiple days in a row. It's important for you to follow the instructions of your orthodontist regarding retainer wear until your jaws are finished growing and your wisdom teeth come in, to make sure your teeth stay straight!
