Hello,
The reason the dentistry will be done in a hospital is so that the child can safely be sedated with proper observation.
Stainless steal caps will be used to restore her teeth. She will have some gum irritation and perhaps some achiness from the injections and from having her jaw open but it should not be severe pain. She will feel normal in a few days after the procedure.
You have chosen a very good way to have your child treated, you should be congratulated. It is not as traumatic as it would be if she were not sedated. She will not have much memory of the procedure and should do well.

Even though her teeth are baby teeth they do need to be treated. She is only three and will need her baby teeth for several years before the permanent teeth will erupt. Even though baby teeth eventually fall out they can still cause pain, still become infected, and cause many health issues if not properly treated.

The dentist will give you post-operative instructions for her care. This type of treatment is routine and should be well tolerated by your child.

Good luck, be well.

If I knew WHY she was going for surgery, I could give you some insight. Can you elaborate, and I will check back to the message board.

Thanks for the additional information.

I am dead set against caps for children, especially three year olds. It is an extremely traumatic event for someone that young. It can ruin her as a patient for the rest of her life. Just imagine YOU getting numerous crowns placed all in one day!!! Beyond that, baby teeth are TEMPORARY teeth. They WILL be shed when she gets older. This means that all a dentist has to do is get some fillings done and do pulpotomies on a need be basis, maybe cement on the odd stainless steel crown (prefab, not customized...work great, very affordable....dentist will have a small box of them in his office)! Forget about esthetics!!! Do what is right for the child, not the dentist's bank account!

You really shouldn't worry. Your child shouldn't be in pain. Doctors are experienced in what they do. However, if you truly are worried about the safety of your child, consult with the doctor performing whatever operation that will be being performed. Also talk to the doctor on the side-effects after the operation. I don't think you should worry at all.

My middle child had to have cavities filled when she was 2 and had to go to the hospital to do it. They do it this way because a child that age will not sit still at the dentist's office. She did fine with it and didn't seem to be in any pain afterwards. At age 5 she had to have a bunch of caps done, but she was old enough to sit still. As to why this happens even when you brush a lot, it may just be heredity. I have bad teeth and my husband has good teeth (no cavaties ever for him). Our oldest and youngest girls have no dental problems, but my middle one ended up with my teeth and has a lot of dental problems. The dentist who did the surgery on my daughter when she was 2 said that she has really deep grooves in her teeth that are nearly impossibe to reach with a toothbrush. He said sealants help.
Well, hope my rambling helps. Take a trusted friend or family member with you to the hospital if possible, that really helped me. Good luck!

My grandaughter had a bunch of cavities too. (she's four). I know her mom helps her brush her teeth morning and night. Some people are more cavity prone...period. I was. The last time my grandaughter had dental work done, they ended up doing some kind of pediactric root canal and her mouth was sooo numb. She ended biting her lip and jaw so bad, she looked like someone popped her real good. She actually looked deformed. So, your baby going into the hospital is much better. Of course you're a nervious wreck! You're the mamma!

the reason this will be done in the hospital is for your daughter's benefit.... it will all be done at one time and she will through with it... she should not have alot of pain, the dentist will let you know what to give her for discomfort..
you should try to remain calm, so your daughter does not get the idea she should be afraid...
