My wife had an infection in her front tooth the dentist drilled ahole and draine!

Question:

My wife had an infection in her front tooth the dentist drilled ahole and drained it.He put temp filling in.?

The next morning she was swollen again. He took the filling out to let it drain.Gave her amoxicillian 500 mg. But this morning she is swollen again.Shouldnt the med be working ? She has been on the med since Tuesday. What could be going on to make her swell up? Should she go back to Dr. Or wait for the med to kick in? Thanks

Answers:

I agree with Dr Albert on this. The tooth should be left open to drain, he has already removed the nerve in the tooth when it was opened so it won't cause any undue pain.

It could also be that she needs to increase the dosage of the antibiotic. She is probably taking 500mg three times a day or a 1500mg dose, she may find some relief with an increase to four times a day, but this should be upon the advise of your dentist. Discuss this with him before doing any medication change. Occasionally the medication will need to be increased or even changed for various reasons, even such as the weight of a patient. The med's should be working by day two or day three, so it's obvious that something needs to be changed. She should also be taking 800mg of Advil or Motrin every 6 hours to help reduce the swelling and pain.

Make sure your wife is avoiding sunlight so she doesn't get burned and also any alcoholic beverages as they tend to decrease the effectiveness of the medication.

Be sure to call her dentist and let him evaluate this and make any changes necessary. Good luck and hope the rest of the root canal procedure goes better than this initial start!
