Teeth contain natural pigments (melanin) just like our skin and our hair. How much pigment we have in our teeth determines how white or yellow they are (assuming there are no superficial stains from foods, beverages or smoking, etc.). People of different races contain different degrees of pigment in their teeth. Note also, that people with darker skin also have pigmented gums and lips. This makes their teeth appear even whiter. Even caucasian people have varying degrees of pigment in their teeth. That explains the wide variation of yellow and white teeth you see. Bleaching is becoming more and more affordable and desirable so you are now seeing more and more folks with unusually white teeth.

The sugar in soda and the dregs of coffee both stain teeth. In the past three decades, Americans have had an obsession with both. Add to that Americans' penchant for eating sweets and artificially colored foods.
Africans' high fiber diet also contributes to the health and cleanliness of their teeth.

Yup, but that's just my opinion. The preservatives & processed foods that they say don't hurt us, actually do. My wife has been eating organic foods for the past two years and the past week she's had a few things that weren't organic and she says she can really feel the effects on her body. She feels more tired & cranky. So if processed food can have that kind of an effect on the body, I'm sure it does something to the teeth.

Personally I think because of their darker skin, Africans have what appear to be extremely white teeth. You probably see "white" people's teeth closer up than than those people living in Africa. In reality though, I think those people who can't afford the right hygenic products, have worse teeth.

But, there is the fact that the poor people don't smoke, drink coffee/caffeine, or other acidic things that turn your teeth yellow.
