Does it hurt when you put braces?? and do you lose any weight while having brace!


Question: P.S i removed 4 theeth "which was not optional" and in my next appointment i'll put the braces but unfortunatly in that same day my mid-term finale exams will start so im afraid about how much its gonna hurt and i won't be able to study....

Having braces placed is uncomfortable and can be considered even painful for the first few days or until you become accustom to them. Being aware and prepared helps to alleviate some of the discomfort. To avoid pain I always recommend taking an Ibuprofen such as Advil or Motrin 400-600mg; this will work to reduce inflammation and swelling and also relieve any pain or discomfort. Take this medication ahead of time or the day your braces are placed, and then every 4-6 hours over the next few days. The Ibuprofen always works better for dental pain; you may want to avoid aspirin or Tylenol altogether.

As for the discomfort or pain interrupting your studies, it's possible that it may interfere, but preparing for your exams could also offer a good diversion from any discomfort. You could always study ahead of time, being prepared so that all you will need to do is review before test time.

Most ortho patients only experience mild discomfort which is taken care of with medication, although some of this discomfort is usually induced by eating certain hard foods during the first few days. If you stick to a "soft food diet" with ice cold foods and drinks; puddings, ice cream, pasta, smoothies, yogurt, Jell-O, oatmeal, eggs and (my favorite) cold spaghetti and many more foods, you will do fine. Some patients loose a little weight but not much due to the ice cream and such that is eaten. The "trick" is to avoid excess pain by not letting your upper and lower
