getting braces is NO big deal. I got my braces in July and i was scared.
When you go to the orthodontist office, they usually have u brush your teeth and then they take an imprint of you teeth with a sticky, gum like substence. After, the nurse cleans your teeth really well and applies a tiny dab of glue to each tooth with a toothpick thingie. THey usually due the bottom braces first, then the top. Then the orthodontist comes and with a tiny tweezer, he GENTLY puts the brackets on your teeth. After each bracket is glued on, the ortho will shine a blue light on them so that they will dry faster. After your brackets are on, they put the wire in. The nurse will put a big wire in your mouth. She will measure the size of your wire to fit your mouth. YOu will hear a few clicks and clangs of her cutting the wire, but you wont feel any pain. The nurse will then thread the wire through the back brackets and then the wire weill just pop in. Heres the fun part: the bands. You can chose colors of bands to put on your brackets. once youve chosen what colors to use, the nurse will attatch them to your brackets.
Still, you dont feel any pain.
THREE TO FIVE HOURS LATER:
Three to five hours later you will feel a slight sore-ness in one of your teeth. That tooth will make the others teeth hurt, and so on. THe pain is not that bad, and it wont make you cry or anything. Just take advil and tylenol and stuff and youll be fine. good luck!!!!
PS!:
get a chocolate bar. just break off a peice and suck on the chocolate. It will take your mind off of your braces.
IT wont change your life much. I personaly LOVE my braces.

it doesn't hurt to have braces put on at all... all they do is glue the individual metal pieces (or plastic if you get clear ones) to each tooth that needs to be adjusted, and attach the wire to link each tooth... there's no drilling at all, totally painless.

afterward, they will show you how to use the rubber bands, which just attach at certain areas overnight.

you will feel some tenderness as your teeth begin to move, but this usually subsides after a day or two... then your teeth will feel normal again. you will feel this tenderness after each adjustment (usually once a month you have an adjustment, but i can't be 100% as it's been a few years since i had mine). take some aspirin during this time to help. it will also be difficult to eat after an adjustment.

don't worry though, there's no excruciating pain from having them put on the first time.

I had braces before and I recently just got them put back on because I didn't have the money for the rest of my dental work at the time. When you first get them on they will take alot of getting used to. They aren't that bad seeing as what the outcome of wearing them is but the most annoying thing is that you get everything you eat stuck in your braces. My orthodontist gave me a little travel toothbrush I take with me and a mirror to clean my teeth immediately after. The other thing you will want to do is ask your orthodontist for a lot of wax if you have any irritation once they get put on. You aren't supposed to eat anything that's too hard like hard candy or have regular gum you can chew sugarless though. Popcorn is okay as long as you make sure your eating the soft top part of the bucket and not the bottom part where it might not be fully popped. Good luck with the braces :)

I had braces put on when I was 14 and only needed them for about 2 years. How long a person needs them will depend on how bad their teeth are and what needs correcting. It doesn't hurt really when they put them on. It feels weird and you might feel some discomfort as well but it's nothing really painful.

You will notice a few days after that your mouth will get very sore as your teeth start to do some moving around. How bad it can be really depends on the person though. I had REALLY bad teeth that needed a lot of moving around so my mouth hurt for about a good week after I got mine on.

After a while though you don't feel pain and eventually you get so used to the braces you forget you have them. My mouth would get a little sore whenever the dentist needed to tighten my braces but it wasn't anything bad.

You shouldn't eat hard candy or certain foods that could bend your braces. Chewing gum isn't recommended since the gum could get stuck in your braces and cause problems. Your dentist should go through everything with you as far what you should/shouldn't eat and will probably give you a list to take home (mine did.)

Normal life doesn't change really. The only thing I noticed was that food tends to get stuck in the braces after you eat but all you have to do is brush your teeth after each meal. If you can't do that since your out just swish some water around your mouth and try to rinse most of the food out until you can get home and brush your teeth.

Good luck. It really isn't as bad as some people make it out to be. Trust me, when they finally come off and you have a great smile it's definitely worth it.

braces dont hurt when they put them on but they hurt the next day .. what they do is put this stuff on ur teeth that kinda feels like sand but dont worry they make you wash it out... then they put on these things that are called rings which they put in the back molars they dont hurt when they put them on but when they take them off to glue them it kinda hurts .. it feels like there yanking out ur tooth. whatever you do DONT taste the glue it taste so BAD.

your normal life doesn't change a lot the only thing that you might get lots of attention the 1st two days but thats about it.

as far as eating goes you can eat almost anything except soda, pop corn, any hard candy, and thats about it.

when they put them on it kinda feels like .. nothing just like someone touching your teeth with there finger but thats about it

oh and FYI brush your teeth after every meal .. trust me on this one

what there for i dont really know but im guess in is to straighten your teeth

Hey Leah, you sound a bit like me, i was a total worrier, iv had braces on my bottom set of teeth for about a year and 2 months now, i got them on the top nearly 3 months ago. (Also must say, time really flys by when you have them on, it seems like yesterday i had myn!!)
Normal life doesn't change but it does take you a while to come to terms with having to have them but after a few weeks you slowly stop caring about the fact you have the braces, im just looking forward to having them taken off now. When you have them put on, you cant really feel much, they put the little brackets on with cement then use a little blue light which sets the cement dry. They then put the metal wire through the brackets which is what moves your teeth and then fit the little elastics on. (My advice would be if you dont want them to stand as as much, go for the silver coloured elastics or more neutral colours which is what iv always stuck to because the coloured ones only make them stand out, but thats ok if you want them to)
I think iv got another 9 months or so with myn. I can't wait and hpefully it'll go fast.
All i can say is don't worry, you'll be the one with the gorgeous smile in the long run and you WILL be sooooo glad you had them, remember there are loads of other people out there with braces so your not the only one thankfully!!
