Is it common practice for orthodontists to file teeth to create space?!

Question: I am using Invisalign, and this is what my doctor did. I should have asked before he did it, but I was not thinking straight at the time.

No - it's not normal - it's unethical.
I had a dentist do this to me to fit a crown, and it resulted in legal action on my part. We went to arbitration instead of court and I won the case.
A good dentist will not ruin a perfectly good tooth on purpose to fit an appliance into your mouth.
I'd find another orthodontist.
Good luck.

that should be the last resot. The dentist should ask you before he does any thing & why.

I haven't had Invisalign yet, but have had a couple of consults (different dentists in different states) and both said they would maybe have to file a couple of teeth a bit to make room, so I guess it is common .

I somewhat cringe at the fact and will avoid it if I can, though.

YES its common. the orthodontist will remove one or ur premolars and ur wisedom teeth if necessary to fill the space. By doing orthodontics u agree to let the ortho do whatever it take to balance ur occlusion and put ur teeth straight. In either way it wont even show.

I've never heard of that practice. Filing down teeth damages them and makes them more vulnerable to decay. The orthodontist was unethical in this particular case. If he needed more space, he should have arranged to get some teeth pulled, like orthodontists normally do.

usually ortho. will remove a bicuspid or a wisdom tooth to create room but filing a tooth structure isnt exactly common. the invisalign is designed to excatly suit ur mouth, since its custome made
