When you get a filling, do you have to hold your mouth open or do they hold it o!

Question:

When you get a filling, do you have to hold your mouth open or do they hold it open with something?

I have to get a couple fillings in six days. I"m still a little nervous about the whole needle thing but the dental assistant assured me that everything will be fine and I probablly won't feel much of the shot. I'm also getting them to pre medicate me. I've been told that after you get it done, you're teeth are sore. I'm a little concerned about them propping my mouth open with something. Paranoid I suppose that I"ll choke. I'm concerned I'm not going to be able to swallow or sleep after I get them. Has anyone ever taken this drug called Sublingual Ativan? That's what they are giving me about 1/2 hr before my actual appointment. Does it really work? Any info would be greatly appreciated. This should be a breeze compared to having to get my wisdom teeth extracted which I need done but I'm taking it out step at a time. Four cavities in 15 yrs isn't horrible is it?

Answers:

No, you're going to be fine. The dentist would like you to hold your mouth open, but if you can't, they can use something called a mouth prop to keep it open. Dont' worry, it's too big for you to swallow or choke on. The shots are really no big deal. They're over and done with in a matter of seconds. Yes, you will likely be a little sore for a few days. Just eat soft foods and take Advil or Motrin and you'll be great!
