Question:

How do you choose a good adult orthodontist?

I went on 4 consults and got 4 completely different opinions!

I had braces as a kid, but I had a bad orthodontist that did not align my bite properly and my teeth have shifted considerably. And here in the Boston, MA area, the cost range seems to be consistent at between $4500-$6000 for the 4 consults I have had and I was told I was a simple case that would take not longer than six months!!! That seems crazy.

Answers:

My dentist recommended one. But I ended up going with someone else only because of the super-duper insurance. They're only costing me $1150! $750 for the treatment plus $400 for ceramic on the top only.

So I didn't even consider anyone else. I just made sure that this one was willing to follow the advice of my periodontist who recommended they intrude my upper front teeth (intrusion).

Are their opinions that different? And why are you getting braces - to correct a problem, to correct a potential problem, or just to look better? Because that may factor into who you should choose.

Outside of that, I don't know what to recommend except for word of mouth.

EDIT: Me too! Got braces at about 9, but my lower teeth shifted and caused havoc with an upper tooth, so here I am again....As for the cost, that does sound about average although $6000 seems high. But maybe it's your area - I'm in Milwaukee.
