my friend has really bad breath,

No one likes to be criticized when it comes to their hygiene, especially their oral hygiene. You may want to approach it with the tact that you are friends and should be able to discuss anything, you would hate it, but also appreciate it if you had a problem, and “a friend“ such as this person, were to bring it to your attention or let you know. This person may or may not be aware of the problem. The problem may be due to decay, gingivitis, perio disease, foods eaten, medication taken or a variety of other reasons.
