Would getting my teeth sawed down minimize the appearance of my overbite?!

Question: I have an overbite, but unfortunately, I don't have enough money for braces. Not only that, but one of my teeth has a small chip in it, so it needs to be sawed down, anyway. Since my teeth are somewhat large and I need to have the chip taken care of, would having them sawed down minimize the appearance of my overbite?

Having a chipped smoothed is much different than reducing the size of your teeth. The dentist can only remove a small amount of enamel when smoothing down a tooth. There is layer under the enamel called Dentin. Dentin has tubuals that lead to the nerve and when exposed can be very sensitive not to mention that it would be damaging to the health of the tooth.

A tooth cannot simply be sawed down. To have a sizable amount removed can damage the nerve, requiring root canal treatment to restore health and comfort. (in other words--cause a toothache.)

There are parts of the dental anatomy that are not commonly understood-but are definitely taken into consideration before a dentist alters a tooth. If your teeth are very large the dentist may be able to smooth them down slightly but chances are they will still need orthodontics to bring them into proper alignment and make them pleasing in appearance.

Hope this helps

not a wise decision. i had a cracked tooth as well and was told it was capped only to find out that there is only a plastic covering over the tooth. this cost is usually high and depending on your age what seems like a huge overbite may be very minimal when you have gotten older i am sure your a beutiful person.love you first before you make drastic changes.

Gina M is right on. : )
