Hey, I can totally relate, I am terrified of going to the dentist too. But I have had 3 root canals before and it is usually no big deal. Most people have no trouble at all and are working, playing sports etc. in a day or two.

I don't want to freak you out but I once went to a dentist because it was a convenient location and it turned out he did not do a good job on the root canal & I still had pain until I went to a much better dentist recommended by a friend, and he fixed it..

To find recommendations of a dentist you can of course talk to friends & neighbors . Also go in Google and type in Dentists Reviews and your city. There are some websites where people can rate their dentists and write reviews, and you can see some have stellar reviews, while others have the opposite and that can help you decide.

You may want to consider going to a tooth root specialist, called an Endodontist. They have tons of experience at root canals. And he also could give an opinion on if it would be best to have the root canal or to extract both teeth. I went to an endodontist once and he was very professional and also, since he does this work so much, was quicker than I had expected. He did a great job. I had no trouble at all.

In case they say you need your wisdom teeth out, go ahead & get it done. I had it: they gave me a shot and in seconds I was out like a light. When i woke up, still groggy, I couldn't believe it was all over. It did hurt some later but not much since they gave me some pain meds and I just took it easy for a few days. It was really easy. I wish I could just sleep through all dentist appointments like that!

Dont be scared. Im getting a root canal in a week. I had my wisdom teeth removed, and you cant tell, they are in the back. If you want to kill 2 birds with one stone, I would get them pulled, at same time. Ask them to put you to sleep if your that worried, but you will be ok. Good luck!

All the horror stories you hear about root canals are not true. As long as your DDS already has the infection under control you will be numb. All you will feel (after the injection which is not too bad) is a weird sensation like filing your fingernails as they file your canal. I am so glad you are facing your fears instead of just pulling your tooth! You really will be fine the hardest part is staying open for so long. If you still feel extremely anxious you can ask your DDS for Valium (someone will have to drive you to and from your appointment) to take before your appointment. Good luck! And make sure you get a crown on this tooth after the root canal.

I suggest you research what other people have to say about root canals. Since this basically kills the tooth, an infection can continue in the bone surrounding the tooth, and you may ultimately have trouble with more than the end tooth and the wisdom tooth. It may be better to have them both out to preserve the rest of your mouth.

I have had 4 root canals and I can tell you that the pain of an abcess is much worse than having the root canal. You will be numb and won't feel a thing. Ask for some nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and I guarantee that you won't even care. I had root canals in two of my back teeth at the same time and I remember sitting there thinking "can I eat pizza when I leave here?"

I also had a tooth pulled last week that broke, then abcessed. It wasn't a big deal either.

Believe me, they give you great pain meds, which I took the first day, but only because the dentist insisted. I didn't need anything the next day and went right back to work.

You will be fine - I promise!

Get the root canal, keep all of your teeth as long as you can.TRhe dentist knows his stuff so not to worry.
