I used to be the same if I were you I'd go and see your doctor a dentist will make you a gum shield only that don't stop you grinding your teeth it only protects your teeth and stops the noise, if you see your doctor he may give you something to make you relax while sleeping or send you to some relaxation classes. I suffer very bad from this problem in fact that bad I have no cartilage in my right jaw joint and have arthritis in the right side of my jaw, very painful I was going to have a replacement only there has not been many done in the UK so am not having it done at the moment. The problem you have is called bruxism or TMJ if you have a look at www.tmj.com you will find out more. Please get it seen to people seem to think it's not a problem but if not seen to it can be a serious problem, I know as I live on painkillers and can now only eat soft foods, good luck and take care.

Go to the dentist, it can damage your teeth..

lol, my husband says i do the same, i seem to do it more when im stressed, our daughter does it too so could it run in the family?

Reducing stress levels may help

You need to get a night guard (Bruxguard).

Bruxism is gring the teeth. There are many side effects. Here's more information...

Go to the dentist, it can damage your teeth they say it is like putting 100 pounds on your teeth

Some people say it is a genetic form of relieving stress. Being from the dental field, I've seen patients go for years trying to remedy their situation on their own without getting a night guard. However, the pressure and force grinders expend on their jaws and teeth causes serious damage, breakage and pain! You can try to get a night guard from the drug store that will mold to your teeth if paying upwards of $600 at the dental office isn't sitting well with you. However, whichever way you look at it, you only have one set of natural adult teeth so do whatever you can to protect them while avoiding and relieving your stress because once your teeth are gone, they're gone! (My husband grinds, too. We're getting him a n.g. this weekend.) Good luck!

gum shield or no teeth

Tooth grinding has something to be associated with stress. Please see your dentist, and he/she will provide you with a night-guard.

The Night Guard really isn't that bad. A simple one from a dentist is plastic and covers the top row of teeth only.

Find out why you're grinding your teeth. It could be an offset bite that can be remedied by wearing braces.

In the mean time:
1. Open your mouth wide and massage both jaw joints, located near your ears.
2. Do some light exercise before sleeping to alleviate stress.

Hope this helps.

Bizarre as it may seem I would suggest that if a gum shield is not for you, you see a properly qualified hynotherapist. They can help you stop grinding and also help you maybe deal with the underlying problem.
Good luck, I to grind my teeth and I know how much it can annoy others around you.
