Can having braces cause bad breath?!

Question: I got braces about three days ago. Now sometimes when I talk to my Mom or my sister they say that my breath smells bad so I run upstairs brush them and then have a strip from my Listerine pocket pack. I don't understand why my breath smells bad because I brush my teeth really well throughout the day.

Is it a known fact that having braces just gives you bad breath? Like, does the metal do something? Please please please help me!

Thanks. :) :) :)

I swear braces do make your breath worse. I brush 2x a day sometimes 3 depending on what I eat. Rinse with listerine and floss EVERYDAY! But sometimes I too still after all that think my breath smells. Truthfully some people have bad breat all the time - mine didn't really start until braces. My mouth is always dry and sometimes I think the dryness causes your breath to kick more. So try hydrating yourself through the day with water (along with making sure you clean your teeth really well) and when brushing make sure to brush your tongue and gumes (lightly) as well. Gargle with listerine if you can after each meal. This may help. And if worse comes to worse just keep a box of breath mints handy!!

i have braces and u only have bad breath if u dont brush and floss ur teeth....this means more than u did when u didnt have braces. ask ur orthodontist for special tools to clean with braces!! there is also special floss u can get from ur orthodontist to floss with braces!! : )

i got braces around two weeks ago. it might be that the bad breath is coming from ur throat. brush ur tongue if bad breath seems to be coming from ur mouth. i kno its awkard but a lot of ppl do it. or u can gargle with scope or another mouthwash. my teeth still hurt, try ur best with brushing good luck =)

Yes, but it's usually because the person didn't brush good enough, but i found out people with braces can't chew reg. gum, it's special gum just for braces, ask the denist to get you some.

Ask your mom to get you a water pick. No matter how much you brush stuff can still get stuck in there. The water pick is like floss but pushes all the junk out!

Yes they can give you bad breath. The reason is that braces have many surfaces that can hold plaque, food and bacteria. The best way to avoid the bad breath is to keep everything extremely clean. Brush throughly at least three times a day for two minutes each time. You need to floss as well. Did your orthodontist show you how to floss with floss threaders? If not the next time you go for your visit ask somebody to show you how. You can also ask the next time you go to the dentist. Rinsing with Listerine works better than using the Listerine pocket packs. Swish with water too that helps loosen particles. Also brush your tongue. The key is keeping everything clean and if you do that you won't have to worry about cavities when the braces come off. Good luck!!

well, i got braces awhile ago and i noticed that same thing. it could just be the food (jello or watever) youre eating...sometimes, sweet foods can give your breath a nasty smell. but you can always ask your orthodontist or dentist, im sure they can halp alot more. but, if it gets worse, just pack some Orbit Gum in your pocket and you should be set! p.s------your mouth must hurt! try sucking on some ice when your mouth starts getting sore. hope i helped alttle!

No, that's crazy. It's possible that you just have a piece of food stuck somewhere back in your braces. I've had my braces for like 3 years and sometimes food gets stuck no matter how much I brush my teeth, I got these like mini toothbrush-like things. They are like these little rubbery things with a toothbrushy like end thats about the size of my pinkie finger. I look over my teeth to find any food and use those to get it out. You can get those at Target or like any store probably. The brand is DenTek, at Target, they're next to the toothpastes and toothbrushes. They work really well!!

Good luck!!

It depends on how much you brush your teeth. I say you should make sure no food are stuck in there and they are clean. I'm only 15 and I've had braces twice :P

i got bracesd today and if u dont do all the things to keep them proper than yes just like my friend her breath kills so i jsut told her to brush better
