Dentists... how much is your production and overhead?!

Question: I am a dental student, and was wondering what the production and overhead and dental office are?

Also, by definition, does overhead including the owner dentist's salary?

thanks!

I hope your dental school includes a business course!! Overhead in the dental office hovers around 70%!! Very high, once you've paid rent, utilities, insurances, licenses, supplies, equipment, payroll and everything else, there's some leftover for you! Your overhead is higher when you first get out of school if you want to factor in student loans and expensive "re-dos" Consider a postgrad residency program. It's like 3-5 years of practice squeezed into just a year. Saves $$ in the long run.

Get out of dentistry and into medicine, optometry or chiropractic before it is too late. Dentists have the highest overhead of any profession. And all you do is deal with problems, problems, problems...all day long!
Helen is very right. Overhead runs 70-80% of your production, but there are many factors involved. Lots of dentists like having the latest gadgets and having the hottest hygienists (big salaries).
My overhead does not include my salary. It includes everyone else's salary. I get what little left over there is every month.
Good luck to you....you will need it!

Since you have already chosen dental school, and are somewhat committed to the field, it is wise to ask the question. Production can vary and it depends upon your schedule planning. If you can "fix" a tooth properly with a more durable restoration, i.e., crown or inlay, as opposed to a filling, then you go to that option. Gaining experience in these restorations can be accomplished by working in a clinic setting (not ideal, but), or working in a group practice. The patients may not always see the same dentists, but you as a dentist, can gain valuable experience in the clinical and business aspects of a practice. Overhead may or may not include the owner dentist's salary. It depends on how you structure the business and if you have a working spouse to help with household expenditures. Your overhead will also depend upon your local salary rates and supplies, and will be affected by the "UCR" (usual customary rate) in your area.
