Jaw Pain really starting to worry me?!

Question:

Jaw Pain really starting to worry me?

Ok so a few day ago I woke up and ate some crunchy cereal, and sometimes it would cause a small ache in my left jaw just at my cheekbones. I thought I had slept on it wrong and ignored it. For a few days everything was fine. Then, about 2 days ago, it started aching when I ate toast. It ached pretty bad, not REALLY bad but enough to make me stop chewing. Then I had another piece to find out if it was Ok, and it was fine! I could eat fine. But then, ever since the toast off and on my left jaw around my cheekbone area hurts when I yawn or open my mouth too wide. Sometimes it hurts really bad, sometimes it's bare-able. And sometimes it hurts back into my head. I think it might be an ear infection, but I'm not sure. I'm worried now though it's not going away on its own. Also, I grind my teeth. At night and sometimes when I'm not talking my teeth grind reaaaally hard and I don't even notice

O and sometimes when I keep grinding my teeth I'll put something soft inbetween them so they'll stop grinding (e.g. my tounge or piece of fabric)

Answers:

First of all, I would suggest some sort of mouthguard for the teeth grinding while you sleep. Secondly, you should see a doctor about your jaw pain. It could be, as you suggest, an ear infection, or also sounds to me like Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome, which is a disorder of the joint between the lower jaw and the skull. Fairly common, it has a number of causes, including grinding of the teeth, bad bite, and arthritis.
Your doctor should be able to tell you more, and also suggest ways to relieve it. Best of luck :)
