What will happen if I start wearing my retainer again?!

Question:

What will happen if I start wearing my retainer again?

I got my braces off in January. I've worn my retainers on and off but it was never really a priority. One of my lower bottom teeth has shifted, and my canine tooth is slightly off to me.
If I begin wearing my retainers CONSTANTLY again (they still fit but its painful) will my teeth eventually shift back to their straight positions?

Answers:

Here is my professional advice, which I am qualified to give as a licensed dentist:

DO NOT JAM THOSE RETAINERS BACK ON.

The pain you are feeling is your teeth being traumatized by excessive force, because the retainers no longer fit.

If you keep jamming on retainers that no longer fit, you might destroy your tooth roots through trauma and inflammatory root resorption.

Go back and see your orthodontist to re-straighten your teeth or make new retainers to keep your teeth where they are now.
