Part of my tooth chipped away?!

Question:

Part of my tooth chipped away?

Tonight I was chewing and a part of my tooth (one nearer the back at the top) chipped away. When I looked at it under a light in a mirror I noticed that the area in which the same piece broke away is black/brown! I am not currently (touch wood!!!) not in any pain but are wondering what would happen if I were to leave it or if I went to a dentist i.e. would he be able to fill it. I floss quite alot (to much acctually) and I do tend to go quite hard when flossing. Would this have any effect on this? I also drink alot of Coca-cola/Pepsi.

When drinking cold drinks I can feel a cold feeling in the offending tooth, so does that mean that it is not dead?

Answers:

the flossing very hard would have a negative effect on your gums, it would eventually make then receded. try flossing with your opposite hand. also you might have to go to your dentist. he/she will either out a cap or a crown on it. unless it is a little chip, at that point he will put a little resin material on it and smooth it out to fill in the tooth. also if you are going to drink soda, rise with water after or brush your teeth, the sugar and acid in the soda eat your enamel.
