Why does my tooth hurt like crazy after dentist?!

Question: I went to the dentist today and he grinded down one of my back teeth. i had novocaine and the whole time i felt no pain, but then all of a sudden while he was drilling i got a horrible sharp pain that made me flinch, and my dentist just said sorry and that he was done.

the novocaine just wore and i have no pain, but tried eating and when i chew on that part i get a horrible sharp pain.

any ideas why?

before the dentist i had no pain whatsoever

When you have work done to your teeth they may be sore afterword this is normal as long as it isn't throbbing. If after a few days its still bothering you when you bite on it your bite may be off. When the Dr adjusts the filling to your bit it may be a little off due to the fact that your mouth is numb and you've had it open for a while. If you dint have it adjusted the soreness will continue and worsen. When your hitting a tooth before the others(no matter how little)it irritates the nerve causing soreness when chewing. It may continue being sore a day or two after getting it adjusted but should improve as the nerve gets less irritated. The sharp pain you felt during the procedure is most likely from either a deep part closer to the nerve or that particular part of your tooth wasn't entirely numb. When this happens it is sometimes easier for the dentist to finish if he is close to being done rather than stop to give you more anesthetic. If the patient can tolerate it.So you wont be numb for three to four more hours

it's just the swelling up. try to avoid that part. dont bother it. you might infect them. hope i helped
