Should I have a rapid palatal expansion?!

Question:

Should I have a rapid palatal expansion?

My orthodontist has recommended that I have a rapid palatal expansion b/c of my bilateral crossbites. My oral surgeon said it would definitely benefit me but he wouldn't go as far as to say that it is crucial that I have it done. They want me to have my braces on a year and then have the procedure in which time I will be 30 years old. I need to know if I should have this done. How painful will it really be? and what is the recovery time? Also, will it change my facial structure? Any info wil be greatly appreciated!!

Answers:

If you get a palatal expander, it'll just be a device the goes over your top molars. You turn a key that gradually moves the two sides of your jaw apart, making it bigger.

However, this takes months. I think what you're talking about is when they actually separate your top jaw into two halves and reposition them. You'll have your teeth wired shut for a while, so Ensure will be your friend. It's a painful experience, but it'll change your facial structure for the good. My upper jaw wasn't big enough prior to surgery, but it's now in proportion to my facial structure. I'd suggest talking with your surgeon and orthodontist about a definite time line and what *exactly* will be done. I had mine done a few years ago, things may have changed.

Good luck in whatever decision you make!
