On a scale of 1-10 how bad do root canals hurt?!

Question: 10 being really painful.
I'm getting one tomorrow and I've never had one so I would like to know. Thank you :) Also, which parts of it hurt?

This is one of those dental urban legends that just won't die. Root canals do not hurt. I am a dentist who has done hundreds of root canals and I have never had a patient complain of pain during the procedure. I have even had many patients sleep through the procedure. Your decayed tooth may hurt before the root canal and you may have some soreness/discomfort afterward but nothing will hurt during the procedure itself.

People think it is supposed to hurt and so that little gem gets kicked around a lot. It is similar to that other dental myth about the dentist who puts his knee into the patient's chest trying to extract a tooth. My guess is that no dentist in the last 100 years has used that technique because it just wouldn't work. EVERYBODY has heard that story but nobody has actually had that happen to them.

I think the hardest part of my job as a dentist is dealing with all the people who are scared out of their minds for no reason. Teenagers with dozens of facial and tongue piercings (and who knows what other piercings?) will sit in my chair shaking because they are "scared of needles." Huh? Explain that one to me. LOL

Most kids under 6 leave my office never even knowing they got a shot; but the adults freak out about it because our culture teaches that they are supposed to be scared. They psyche themselves up so much that everything seems 100 times worse to them than it actually is. I know it is a little scary because it is unknown, but you will feel better if you don't let yourself get too worked up about this.

Sorry this is getting long. My point is there is a lot of folklore about root canals and dentistry in general that just isn't true. You have nothing to worry about. Best of luck.

It depends on the dentist. I've had 3 with no pain at all. I heard all the horror stories and was scared to death when I went in for the first one.

Drugs are the way to go. If you go to the right man he will not let you feel anything.

I would rate is about a 3 or 4, and that's after the pain meds wear off. The actual procedure didn't hurtl. Just keep taking the pain pills and it shouldn't be a big deal at all. It's better than the pain before having it. I didn't find it any worse than a filling.

Root Canals are Fun!!!!
Okay, I am lying.
Seriously, they hurt like a bit*h sweetie. Get you some gooooooooood pain killers and you will be fine!

ehh the only thing that hurt me was just the idea of it...
but it dont really hurt physically

Having a root canal filling done isn't too bad. About a 4 on your scale. What is about a 6 or 7 is having the nerve in the tooth die of it's own accord, which is why I needed a root canal filling. IT was agony. I had to wait a week to get into the dentist, and I was on a farm operating heavy machinery, bombed out of my brain on painkillers. Then, the day before I was going in for the filling, the pain stopped and the nerve finally died. Fortunately for me, I had a great dentist. My dentist was very experienced at doing root canals with NO anasthetic, because he used to serve in the military in his country of birth before he emigrated to Australia, and had lived a pretty exciting life. So for him, doing a standard root canal filling with proper anasthetic and drugs was a walk in the park. I didn't feel a thing. He really was an expert.

I am currently halfway through a root canal filling myself (I'm getting the final filling next week). I've not had any major pain this time, and the anasthetic at the dentists is pretty good. You might need a couple of panadols just to take the edge off it afterwards, if you get any pain at all.

Good luck, and don't be scared of the dentist. IF you find a good one, they are worth their weight in gold. Shop around and ask people for recommendations.

awfull but it depends on what they give you for pain. Make sure it is gas and something that will knock you out....8 or a 7 with hyrocodone
