I Just Had My Wisdom Teeth Removed?!

Question:

I Just Had My Wisdom Teeth Removed?

I had my wisdom teeth removed this afternoon. For any doctors or other people who have had this done...what can I expect in the next few days in regard to pain, bleeding, swelling, etc.? Your input is extremely valuable. Thanks in advance for the help!

P.S. I'm an 18 your old male, if that matters.

Answers:

As a dentist myself I can assure you that minimal bleeding/oozing can last several days after an extraction, if the bleeding continues or worsens then you will want to give your regular dentist a call. A dry socket will usually present itself within the first 72 hours after an extraction, usually after those first 72 hours the chances of dry socket decreases considerably. Be sure not to smoke, drink from a straw or do any strenuous exercise for the first 72 hours, longer if you can. You may experience some minor pain and swelling, I always advise my patients to take Motrin (Ibuprofen) for pain, this will also help with inflammation. Ice packs also help numb the area and reduce swelling. Continue taking any medications your dentist may have prescribed and begin gentle warm salt water rinses after the first 24 following the extraction, this will insure that food debris does not get into the socket and will also help fight off infection. Good luck and hope you are feeling better soon!
