Question:

I had a tooth removed today at 2:30 pm, and its still bleeding. HELP!!!?

Earlier today, I had a tooth pulled (about 2:30pm) and now its 7 pm and its still bleeding! I did everything they instructed me to do and it hasn't stopped yet. They said to call them if bleeding continues, but their office is closed. I already tried using a wet teabag. Does anyone have any advice for me?

Answers:

As a dentist myself I can assure you that minimal bleeding/oozing can last several days after an extraction, if the bleeding continues or worsens then you will want to give your regular dentist a call. A dry socket will usually present itself within the first 72 hours after an extraction, usually after those first 72 hours the chances of dry socket decreases considerably. It can actually take months for the extraction site to completely heal and even then there may always be an indentation. Should the bleeding become worse contact your dentist via his/her emergency number or visit your local ER. Continue taking any medications your dentist may have prescribed and after the first 24 hours begin gentle rinses with warm salt water, this will insure that food debris does not get into the socket and will also help fight off infection. Good luck and hope you are feeling better soon!
