It's known as punctate leukonychia (medical term for "white spots"). Extreme cases can tun the nails entirely white and leukonychia has been linked to all kinds of nasty diseases.
The precise cause of leukonychia is unknown but is most common in the young and women and often shows up when the body undergoes stress or trauma (like a blow to the fingernail). Excessive manicuring can make it worse. Oh, and don't work in a pickle factory because that makes it worse??!! Go figure.
You might try taking zinc (50 milligrams/day) because it is sometimes linked to a zinc deficiency.

I heard if was from injuring them. Try not to bump your fingers on things.
