It depends on the oral surgeon. Insurance should cover a great deal of it and you will have a co-pay. I hope you have insurance. Dentists often refer to oral surgeons if the tooth roots are deep and twisted together. They have to do a little deeper digging. Dentists used to do this. I don't know why or when the change. Good luck. I am suprised you were not given antibiotics by the dentist though. Usually they all prefer to have the infection gone prior to tooth extraction. God Bless.

Since your tooth is infected, your dentist probably wants someone who specializes in oral surgery (because that is what this would be considered) to do it. That way, if it is spread to the gums or you need stitches then the oral surgeon can easily take care of it.

It depends on where the tooth is. Because the nerves are so close to your eye, and other important parts, the front teeth are usually referred out. Also, if the tooth has an angled root, or tipped. An oral surgeon can make the experience much better for you. Because of the infection, the root is soft, and the chances of a regular dentist breaking the tip, or roof off are high, which would mean more time in the chair and more pulling and more pain for you. There are some dentists that will do it, but lately, it is much better to see an oral surgeon for any of the above mentioned problems. Yes,they do cost more, but it can filed with your insurance. If you don't they will usually work with you on payments. The Oral Surgeon will be your best bet for limited pain and faster recovery.

it may require anesthesia so your dentist may not want to risk it doing that himself.

Cause they're the only ones who can pull a tooth.

Have you asked your dentist this question. Your dentist may feel that procedure is more complicated because of the infection! As for cost, ask the surgeon's office about that when you visit. for the pre-op!

In Britain a routine dentist would do it unless your roots are resting on the sinus membrane. Even then oral surgery isn't always called for. Good luck though, I hope you're not squeamish!
