Another Extraction Question?!?!

Question: well i got an extraction months ago on the left side of my mouth and that one went well. but now i'm worried about my most recent extractions that i got today. i had 2 wisdom teeth pulled out on the right side, one on the bottom and one on top, but the bottom seems to be accumlating blood as if it's drying up. i managed to very easily display this to my mom when i showed it to her on my finger. it was really dark red and kind of squishy like a very little piece of rasberry..mmmm. anyways the dentist told me not to spit or drink from a straw or eat on that side, duh. but all ive been doing is drinking from a water bottle and i hope it's not that stupid blood clot they warned me about. so what now?

The clot is actually something you want to see. It's closing off the open wound left when they pulled the tooth, and is sealing the bone of your jaw off from the air. The reason they don't want you to suck through a straw or eat on that side is to prevent dislodging that clot. You need it to stay exactly where it's at for a week or so. If you do something to dislodge it, you can start bleeding again. You will also raise the risk of developing a dry socket. That occurs when the clot is lost, and the bone begins to lose moisture, dehydrate, because of exposure to the open air. It's a common complication, usually because folks don't follow the after care directions. In the meantime, keep your fingers out of the spot and out of your mouth. What your fingers have on them, you don't want to get into the wound. Keep drinking, and eat on the other side, just like you were told to do. Leave that clot alone too. Dry socket will take a few days to show up, it usually shows up about day 4-5, and will be a bad pain in the jawbone below the extraction site. That will mean a trip back to the dentist to have it packed, and although it will solve the problem and make it quit hurting- it's not something to do for giggles and grins. So just relax, and keep your fingers out of your mouth, and leave that clot alone.
