It could well be an abscess of some kind which is a form of infection. The only way to deal with it is a course of penicillin which you will need to obtain from your GP.
Regardless of whether it is an abscess or not, you should go to your GP to have it looked at. There are any number of reasons for such a thing and honestly, better to get it seen to early than wait.

It could be a impacted wisdom tooth.
It could be an abscess of some sort of just a simple ulcer. If it doesn't start to clear up in a few days you should consult your dentist because it could lead to a pretty terrible infection and even MORE pain.
You should see a doctor or dentist as soon as possible. An infection any place on your head is something that needs to be taken care of. I suspect it is an impacted wisdom tooth. When I had one it went from a sore mouth to a face swollen like a baseball in about 8 hours. Don't wait!
maybe an std... lol.. just playin.. but seriously, use mouthwash and take some lysine (a special type of vitamin) if it still hurts tomorrow, consult a doctor. in could just be a cut or a canker sore.
