Can anyone give me details about dental distal posts?!

Question:

Can anyone give me details about dental distal posts?

I will be getting a distal post and crown on a tooth that already had a root canal done a long time ago. What is a distal post? Is it surgery? Does it hurt alot afterwards? Should I take the following day off work? How is it done?

Answers:

Shouldn't hurt at all.

The dentist will remove some of the gutta percha root canal seal out of the back canal (AKA the distal canal) of the tooth, and put in a post. The back canal is usually used because it's naturally wider than the canals at the front of the tooth.

Since the tooth no longer has a living nerve in it (the root canal procedure you got a while ago removed the nerve), you should feel no pain at all while this is being done.

The post is necessary so the dentist can use it to build your tooth back up so it will anchor a crown properly.

Hope this helps.
