Need to have a root canal and I am terrified?!

Question:

Need to have a root canal and I am terrified?

I need to go for a root canal tomorrow afternoon and I dont like the idea of it. The dentist did the xrays and there were two dark areas around my left molars, the teeth need to be capped also.

I have finished the penicillin and there is no more pain so I was thinking on canceling. They are going to give me Nitros Oxide but I think they will need to sedate me.

I am really not looking forward to this at all.

Around 3-4 years ago I was told I needed a rootcanal and after the round of penicillin didnt have nay pain until a few weeks ago. would I be ok just to leave it

Answers:

As a dentist I HIGHLY recommend that you keep your root canal therapy appointment. Even though you are finished with antibiotics and the tooth feels better you will need to finish the treatment on the tooth or the infection will return. There is a reason why your tooth became infected and left untreated the problem will return and pain is usually much worse the second time around. An infection (abscess) is a very serious problem that left untreated can have very serious serious and sometimes fatal consequences. Do yourself a favor and get this taken care of now before the infection returns and trust me- it WILL return. Don't worry about the root canal treatment, if you choose to have the Nitrous Oxide this will keep you relaxed for the Lidocaine injection that your dentist will give you to block the nerve from feeling any pain; I can assure you that between the injection and the Nitrous you will not feel any pain during the procedure and despite popular belief there is NOT a lot of post root canal pain as your dentist is removing the nerve from the tooth itself. Just sit back and relax and you will do fine. Good luck and feel better soon!
