Would my being a tongue thruster cause my mouth to protrude?!

Question: The dentist told me several years ago that my tongue goes forward when I swallow. Now my mom is saying that my tongue thrusting is causing my mouth to push forward. Because I have a slight to moderate overbite, she also thinks the fact that I never got braces is a problem. So, my question is: If I got braces and learned to stop thrusting my tongue, would it help prevent my mouth from protruding?

It depends on how old you are. I was told the same thing at a very young age and taught myself not to "thrust" my tongue any more. Fortunately, I was young enough that my teeth ended up straight.
Yes, braces will help and they even have appliances now that they will put in your mouth to keep you from thrusting your tongue.
If you think about it logically, they say your tongue is one of the strongest muscles in the body (it is obviously the most used...it is in constant motion) and if, every time you swallow, you push your tonge against the back of your front teeth, of course they will protrude. Your teeth are not anchored with cement, they are in sockets surrounded by bone....
A very long explanation...sorry. But yes, braces will help. The tongue thrust appliance will help....

Good Luck with a straight smile!!!

never heard of that before!

I just heard a dentist say today that the habbit of tounge thrusting can cause your teeth to protrude.
