Can somebody PLEAAASE HELP ME!? Swollem salivary glands??!

Question: at first I thought it was a muscle until somebody tol me that they were salivary glands from how I explained it: triangular looking under the jaw (the submandibular glands, not the partoid ones.) U can see them real good when u put your head back or turn your head, and feel them 2. Over a week ago, I started massaging this section for no reason. I was nervous and just started doing it, and I kept on and on. And this was when I noticed the problem. It made my throat get soar and then I seen those. I was in the cold weather today so now it's making the back of my tongue feel numb and under my chin where the swelling is. Then it spread to pretty much my whole face. It left, but the tongue and chin feels the same. Do u think me messing with them like that could've caused the problem? I wouldn't have done it if I knew what they were. Please, help me and tell me what to do. I'm a college student so the nursing office is closed for the rest of the week. I need some answers.

I'm a dentist.

Indeed, you do have two submandibular salivary glands located--as the name suggests--beneath the mandible. Typically, they are soft and you cannot feel them.

As for the numbness of your tongue, it is possible that swelling from these glands could press up against your tongue and inhibit the function of the nerve that provides sense of touch to your tongue.

There are a number of things that can cause this swelling, including cysts, tumors, and infections of the submandibular glands. Often times, infections are accompanied by fever, so you should watch out for it. The fact that it has spread to your whole face within a fairly short time suggests infection.

Without examining you, I cannot make a recommendation. Obviously, you need to see your dentist promptly (who will likely refer you to an oral surgeon).

Well, really, quit playing with them. If you do something long enough anywhere you're bound to have secondary issues. You've probably inflamed the gland as well as a few lymph nodes. Find something else to do. Take 800mg of ibuprofen as long as you're not allergic) every 8 hours b the clock for 3 days. That should bring the swelling in the glands down far enough that they'll be less noticeable

Are you running a fever (even if a small one)? If so, get to a doctor if you possibly can; hopefully you're on your family's health insurance and can go somewhere in town on the insurance (and even if not, I would suggest going to one anyway). Doctors often check for swelling there as a sign of infection, which you probably felt the start of, when you were rubbing them "for no reason". One disease that it can signify is mumps, I know, not sure about others.

dont worry! mine swell up alot and nothing is wrong with me. it usually may mean that i might get a cold, but if i dont get a cold it usually will reduce its swelling day by day.
i hope this helps!
