  • More friction.

Because the gauze gets a better grip on your tongue. If he just used rubber gloves it would be slippery.

    some people have latex allergies

    cause' it would slip out

Tongue is slippery. The gauze gives a better grip.

bs guy above me. my dentist doesnt

to hold the slippery tongue better

for grip if he used just the glove he would have to really pinch to keep a hold of your wet tounge

Some people are allergic to latex. How would you like your tongue swelling up so you couldn't shut your mouth, or swallow.

He can toss the gauze in the trash easier and prevent the spread of diseas or anyother bacteria cause if a glove is on his hands he or she will possibly keep the glove on touch other tools

better grip, tongue is moist which may cause loss of grip with latex gloves, also I wonder if it has something to do with possible latex allergy in patient?

Better grip as the tongue is your strongest muscle and it is very slippery to move with gloves on!

He doesn't want HIS tongue to stick to the latex glove when it's in YOUR mouth.

one never grabbed my tongue before but w/ the latex glove the saliva makes it slippery of course, but the guaze dosn't like teh otehr person sadi better grip.
But why do they grab your tongue?????

    you tongue is very slippery....

They get more of a grip.

Tongue is very slippery and hard to grab with slick gloves. We use a cotton gauze to easily grab and control the tongue to check it for cancer or other problems.

I've never had a dentist grab my tongue before....hmm. i guess it's the possible allergy, and the gauze grabs it better.

He doesn't come prepared that way.

People that are answering about latex just don't know a thing about it. First off, they do the whole exam with gloves on. They may be latex, but most places now have latex free supplies so they don't have to deal with the allergy issues. Even if they were using latex gloves, the whole exam would have been done wearing them. Also, the gauze would not be any kind of barrier for the latex as people with true latex allergies react to the shedding of latex particles that become airborne and then are inhaled.

The reason they use the gauze is because they can grip it better to look for lesions and cancer of the tongue.
