Old-Fashioned Braces?!

Question: I'm getting braces in a week, and I'd like to know: I've seen pictures of those really, really old braces that go around your whole mouth. My orthodontist claims to use the "most modern techniques" (a complete lie), so is it possible that I'll have to wear those? Because I have a weird gum problem where if my gums get cut, then I have a ridiculous infection and get sick. I don't think the orthodontist cares (trust me, she doesn't care), so do you think I'll just get the normal ones with the brackets and wire?

Also, I'd like to know how long I'll have to wear them. The ortho has never seen my mouth before, but I have a class II overcrowding on the top jaw and negligible malocclusion. She says it'll be 18 months, what do you think?

Why all the negativity? You've made this really hard to answer because 1) you've asked questions that are not general to everyone. For example, the amount of time braces are on differ from person to person and situation to situation, and the type of braces used depend on your needs and what you ask for 2) you're asking for people to predict the future--Who knows what she'll put on your teeth!?!. Who knows how long they'll be on for!!??? 3) you're making this somewhat of a trick question...You're asking which ones she'll put on you and how long she'll make you wear them while basically assassinating her character (before you've even met her---???? I'm wondering about that....) and implying that she'll keep them on longer than she should and that you'll end up with the kind you don't want. So....How should we answer this question...? If she wasn't a liar and she cared I'd say she'll give you modern braces that will be on about 18 months. Oh...but....she doesn't care--And she's a liar! So, therefore I can't predict anything because she doesn't care and she's a liar!
To me it sounds like you've answered your own question:

She will put the "old fashioned" braces on and they'll be on for a gazillion years.

The best I can offer you above and beyond my sarcasm is to say:
Perhaps you should not make assumptions about a doctor you've never met and when you do actually meet her perhaps you should say, "I'm really worried about the kind of braces you'll put on me and how long you they'll be on for. Could you tell me those two things?"
Try that....It's much better than the negative, assumptive pouty approach you've taken so far.
Good luck!

I think if she tries to put you in that horrible old-fashioned head brace just clamp your mouth shut and refuse. She can't FORCE you to wear it.

there is a 1% chance of getting the old ones. You shouldn't have to worry about that. And as for how long? Depends on how well kept your teeth are and how fast they move. 18 months is about right, but no worries! It goes fast! ... but you'll want some origel numbing stuff.

Im soo sorry, i have braces with a wire and stuff, but you could get invisaline!! talk to your parents about your orthodontist.i feel so bad for your condition...... my gums have never been cut though! and i have had braces forever!

What do you mean old-fashioned braces? Most braces have brackets and wire? It's not weird or anything, most people have them when they get braces. The ortho will give you wax to put over the brackets in case of irritation, but I've never once got a cut on my gum and I've had wire braces for 2 years now.

Orthodontists never really know the exact time for how long you will have them. They told me a year and it's been almost three years, but I'm finally getting them off in February. They can't pinpoint it exactly so you sort of just have to see what happens.

If you have overcrowding, you should have gotten a pallet expander already to make more room. If you haven't, that is strange, but who knows.

If your ortho has never seen your mouth before how do you know you will get braces in a week? First of all, these are questions you will have to ask her. Second, no one uses braces that go around your whole mouth. Some people do wear headgear but only at night. Third, if you really don't like or trust the orthodontist, go somewhere else. This is a long, expensive process that shouldn't be taken lightly.

you should probably find another orthodontist.... i had a really good relationship with my ortho, he asked me what kind of braces i wanted before hand (grey shiney ones, clear, colored, whatever...) and he always walked me through each step of the process... it sounds like your ortho hasnt really given you enough information about the process.... the questions you're asking here should be questions that have already been answered for you by your ortho, not by yahoo strangers... you should seriously consider finding another one if possible because not only could you be wasting your money with this ortho, but your teeth may end up getting even worse..... good luck to you

mine have to be for 2 years when i get them which is probably between end of jan. to mid feb.

Old fashion braces aren't that bad. I haven't gotten cut by my wire ever...I cut my finger when I accidently poked it, but it was only a little blood. Most people get the regular braces...Since they're the least expensive. The orthodontist has never sen your mouth before? She would have to already. They usually don't give you a choice, unless you request when you first see the orthodontist. And if you tell them about your problem, the day you get them, its no point in changing their mind. They already have everything laid out. Just get the normal braces.

I have braces, the ones with the brackets and wires, and it's working good for me. If you're going to get these ones, then I would suggest getting wax for them so you don't get cut. I've had mine on for 16 months and I'm getting them off in 2 months.

<--------------- had braces for 5 years
i dont know what you mean by old fashoined braces, but if you dont trust your ortho find a new one!!! trust me i didn't trust mine and now i'm 20 and have to have braces on my bottom teeth again oh yeah and 18 months my butt they said that to me too but if you get braces your mouth is going to get cut up... get some wax it helps to smooth out the sharp eldges
