What home remedies are best for toothache?!

What home remedies are best for toothache?
I don't have ground cloves, tea tree oil or tarragon. Ibuprofen helped a bit but I'm unwilling to keep taking it?

my partner has bad toothache at the moment, and he ended up calling NHS direct this morning... the nurse he spoke to recommended that he kept taking the painkillers, but no more than 6 ibuprofen, and 8 paracetamol within the space of 24hrs.
he's also found that a hot water bottle helps, but don't press it too firmly against your face.... apparently that can make it hurt even more !
