I'm 12 weeks pregnant...is crown work safe?!

Question: I have 3 teeth that have already been worked on, all the dentist needs to do now is shave them down (which requires novocaine) , and put the crown on. I've put this off since I found out I was pregnant but I am getting anxious now. I have an appt with my doc next week and I will ask her then but I want to know is it usually safe?

If you're worried about the anesthetic (novocaine......although FYI, no one uses novocaine anymore they usually use articaine or lidocaine)"local anesthetics and vasopressors are not teratogens and may be safely administered to pregnant patients during any trimester".

Re: xrays, sometimes it is necessary to take them on pregnant patients. eg: You're not going to let someone's abcess chronically leak bacteria into the blood stream for 9 months so you sometimes need to assess the situation as best possible in order to minimize harm. Theoretically dental xrays do not cause birth defects. However, no dental person would knowingly take them on you unless it was absolutely necessary to do so.

make sure the dentist would not take any X-rays.

call the dental office before you go so u dont waste a trip, also call your ob/gyn

Yes, its safe, the only thing to avoid is obviously an radiograph ( xray)
The only real concern is if your tooth already has an amalgam filling (silver filling).
The dentist should use a rubber damn to isolate the tooth and to stop any mercury that might escape being swallowed by you. The aspirator (the suction used) is so powerful its removed immediately.
Its nothing to worry about at all however.
If you are still worried ask your dentist to place a temp filling until you have had your baby and feel comfortable going ahead with the procedure.
