Does a permanent retainer break easily?!

Question: I had braces several years ago and used a clear plastic retainer that fit over my teeth. I wore it religiously but my teeth STILL moved and now I have braces, yet again. This time I would like to have permanent retainers installed, since the removable ones are basically crap. Do the permanent retainers break easily???? My orthodonist said that its not a good idea to have them on your top teeth because I might bite down on it and break it. Has anyone actually had that happen? He said it's up to me if I want to take that chance.

bWhen you bite down your bottom teeth naturally fit behind your top teeth leaving little room for a permanent retainer. If the permanent retainer is in the way you could either wear down your bottom teeth your you could break it off when you bite. Besides all that it would be uncomfortable, you'd feel like you were constantly biting on something hard.
It;s not unheard of placing a permanent retainer on the top nut it's more trouble than it's worth

I had a permanent retainer behind my bottom lower teeth. It was there 15 years when I finally had it removed by choice. It never broke.
Not sure about how one on the top teeth would be.
