what does it feel like when you need a root canal? I have a small dull ache on the right side of my chin. Hurts a little more when I bite. Think this sounds like a root problem or just a cavity?

It sounds to me like a small cavity. However, even a little decay needs to be treated right away so it doesn't get any worse. Go to your dentist, have some x-rays taken, and he'll get you fixed. From the descriptions that you're giving, it doesn't sound bad enough to need a root canal...yet...
