I have a few questions about orthodontic expanders.?!


Question:

I have a few questions about orthodontic expanders.?

Please answer all my questions!
1.) Does it hurt when they are putting it on?
2.) How long is it sore for?
3.) Is it painful when you have to turn the key?
4.) What can't you eat?
5.) Do you recomend taking tylenol or advil before I go to the orthodontist?
6.)Anything else I should know?

P.S.- Im getting a palatal expander (one that doesnt come out)


Answers:

I had that when I was in the 6th grade and remember it vividly.

1- No, it doesn't hurt when they're putting it on. You'll feel a little pressure, that's about it.
2- Soreness after expanding each time lasted a day or two at the most.
3- Yes, it can be painful when you turn the key. I had my mom or dad do it, so I didn't have to. That is the worst part.
4- I wouldn't eat things like peanut butter, taffy, hard candy, etc. Nothing sticky or hard.
5- I don't think you'll need to take advil or tylenol before going to the orthodontist. However, taking some about 30 minutes before turning the key each time wouldn't hurt.

Good luck! It IS a pain while you have it, but trust me, it is worth it in the long run!!!
