Answers: and what happens to your real teeth and how much they cost
A dentist must first remove a thin layer of enamel off of the front of your tooth including a bit below the gumline and from the biting edge.
She takes an impression of the tooth after is has been prepped (reduced) and sends it to a dental lab.
She then uses enamel-colored bonding material or resin to fashion a temporary veneer for you to wear for several days until the finished porcelain veneer is available to insert.
When the porcelain veneer arrives, you return to the office, your dentist removes the temporary veneer, and cements your porcelain veneer on.
If made correctly, it will match your other teeth PRECISELY. It will be the same thickness as your other teeth. It will be the same length as your other teeth. It will be seated just under the gum so that you cannot see the edge of it. It will STAY ON.
Sadly, and ridiculously, they are priced very similarly to full porcelain crowns. Depending on your dentist, around $800.
Some dental offices are equipped with CEREC which allows the dentist to make a porcelain veneer in ONE visit, no temporary resin veneer required. Worth looking into.
