Why do metal caps on teeth develop holes?!

Question:

Why do metal caps on teeth develop holes?

My caped molars have developed holes. I feel I may have to recap them.

Answers:

Your teeth chomp down with hundreds of pounds of pressure when you chew or bite. Over time one tooth hitting the other causes the metal to wear thin and then eventually it goes all the way thru to make a hole. Be sure to get the cap filled so that you don't develope cavities. Some dentists will just fill the hole if the cap still fits well. I have had two of these done on gold crowns on my molars and they are doing well almost 4 years later. Depends on the dentist's philosophy (and greed) and condition of your crown. Good luck.
