Cud this be a reason why my teeth are moving back to their old places?!

Question:

Cud this be a reason why my teeth are moving back to their old places?

ok, i wear my retainers religiously!!! i wear it 24/7, just as my orthodontist told me to. the only time i take them out is to eat for like 30 min. and brush my teeth. but i just went to my orthodontist the other day, and he said that my teeth were shifting!!! whyyy oh whhyy. my mom said it was b/c my gums are weak. ok, i don't floss a lot, just every other day. and i brush my teeth. so she said that i should start flossing twice a day, and that will stengthen my gums, thus helping my teeth stay straight in place. would now flossing religiously actually do that for me? would stronger gums mean that my teeth won't move as much?

Answers:

Well...I hate to disagree with Mom, but I don't think so. If you don't keep your mouth clean you will build up too much calculus( tarter) that can eventually lead to bone loss around your teeth. Do your gums bleed when you brush or floss? Bleeding is a sign of inflammation and tells you something is wrong there. What did your orthodontist give as a reason why your teeth were moving back? And did he say they were "shifting" or "moving back"-there is probably a difference. The retainer is not going to hold your teeth in one place like your braces did. Was the orthodontist alarmed? You all are paying him/her good money, ask them the questions; that is part of the service!
