Ok not sure how to ask this?!

Question: I went to my dentist 3 months ago. I had a cavity filled, now I go back shooting pain same tooth. They tell me I need a route canal, could this be a result of the dentist not getting it right the 1st time? It may be a silly question but, the tooth continued to bother me for a while after I had the cavity fixed, but now I'm wodering if they were at fault?

No it's not their fault. Sometimes that works and a filling is all you need. The nerve can grow away from the filling site. So it's worth a shot to not have to go through a root canal. But sometimes it doesn't work. The nerve can even grow towards the filling site...ouch.

No.
They wanted to try and fill the cavity first. That is standard procedure.
Your cavity was too big and it exposed the root. That is why it is sensitive.
It happens. Good luck with the root canal.
