If you had a tooth with a dead nerve would it be sensative to pain?!

Question: Last week I had a molar filled and had to get an extra dose of novacaine. Today I got the tooth checked for a crown and the doc said the nerve is dead. I forgot to ask the doctor how can the nerve be dead but hurt like hell when he's drilling it.

You are right in your thinking. The nerve must be alive in order to feel pain. However, with dead nerves in your tooth you can still feel pressure and you can still feel heat from the drilling; nearby nerves will pick this up.

In your case, you may have three or four nerves in your molar and only one is dead. Remember to ask a lot of questions if the doctor wants to do any more work (root canal, etc.) so that you know exactly what your options are.

no because there is no nerve to feel pain.

YES its gotta hurt. worse if the roots become exposed.

Yes, the nerves around the tooth would feel the pain. Also, swelling and infection cause pain. Sounds like you are in for a root canal! I feel your pain.

I have a situation where I had a root canal, therefore the nerve should have been removed but I still have pain in my tooth on occassion, the cause of this I am told is because the nerve wasnt' all the way extracted, therefore in your case I'm going to assume the nerve isn't completely dead yet it might be almost dead but not completely, because if it were you would not feel any pain in it as there would be no nerve endings.

Nerve may not be dead, needs to be removed. There may be an underlying infection. Or pressure on the tooth may rock it in the socket, thereby the surrounding tissue is irritated.

It shouldn't have hurt if the nerve is dead, maybe a dull annoying feeling, but not painful.
I'd go back & tell him, you might need it re-cut

because there is more than one nerve that can feel at least the vibrations. and it is part mental as well

Some dentist are a bit thick if the nerve was dead you shouldn't feel anything.
Besides how would he/she know the nerve is dead they sure cant feel it

because it is dead. you fill a lot more pain because of the tooth 's roots.as long as that bad tooth is in your mouth the pain will come too life.

Get a new dentist. I just heard that dentists earn more per year than lawyers or doctors.

One more tought...dentists, doctors, lawyers...in every category someone finishes last in their class. Scarey!

Well yes, maybe its not all the way dead. I have a broken wisdom tooth, broke almost down to the gum, it doesn't hurt though, Im getting it extracted on Friday, Im scared!

i guess when you think about it yes the nerve is dead but that doesnt mean hes not drilling into tissues surrounding the nerve as well. so think about it as if like your gums were getting drilled. that would hurt too now wouldnt it? because its still tissue. so thats my guess.

yes i just went thru this and do me a favor and get the tooth puled no root canal i did one it cost me a pretty penny adn the tooth was fine for a little while then the pain started up all over agian and it fell out anyway so i should of just gotten the f thing pulled in the first place dont waste your time or money or anymore pain get it pulled nobody will know it's in the back.

About 25 years ago, I crashed my bike and broke my two front teeth...
The dentist removed the remains of my two front teeth and removed as many of the nerves as possible but a couple couldn't be removed as they were still live.
I think you'll find in your tooth, that you have lots of nerves and some of them are still alive, hence the pain.
And if you're really interested, the nerves looked like little worms!
I may not be 100% on this as I'm not dentist, it was 25 years ago and I was only 13 at the time...

well maybe the nerves aorund the tooth on the gum arent dead and the tooth is probs still connected to them

The nerve could have died recently. Sometimes decay spreads to the pulp, when that happens you can experiance pain & damage to the pulp. Maybe the problem that caused the need for that large filling is the same problem that killed the nerve

i had an abcess in a big tooth at the back of my mouth and dentist said that it was a huge filling on it. i then remembered that it was the filling i had replaced a year before without anesthetic and my new dentist said it must have been dead when i had the filling done to not feel any pain so im guessing... no it doesnt hurt! :)
