Has anybody here had veneers? my son wants them on his front two upper teeth do!

Question:

Has anybody here had veneers? my son wants them on his front two upper teeth do you think it is worth doing?

his two front teeth are slightly discoloured and as he is 17 he is very aware of his appearance. I think they are not too bad they are lovely and straight just a little off colour

Answers:

I am also a dentist. You now have two choices with veneers. Traditional veneers (where you shave down teeth) or Lumineers (no shots, minimal if any shaving down of teeth). Dental schools are now practicing minimally invasive dentistry. ie: don't shave down unnecessary tooth structure if possible. I have placed Lumineers on patients that have slightly discolored teeth like your son's and would definitely recommend finding a dentist that does Lumineers in your area.

The great thing about Lumineers is that it is totally reversible. ie: 15 years down the road, if your son decides he doens't like the shade of the Lumineers anymore, the dentist can remove them and your son's untouched natural teeth are right below. With traditional veneers, more tooth structure is prepped (shaved). Even though with traditional veneers you shave down very little tooth structure, you STILL shave down more than Lumineers...thus, it is irreversible.

I'm very curious why other dentists don't hop on the Lumineer bandwagon. I'm guessing they are older dentists with older training/schools of thought. Again, dental schools are now pushing minimally invasive dentistry. Less prepping is better for the longevity of the teeth.

I placed 8 units of Lumineers on my last patient with tetracycline stained teeth. He loves them...he told me that it feels very smooth and is not bulgy at all...feels like natural teeth.
