My jaws seem to 'lock' sometimes. What is that condition?!

Question: Sometimes, when I stretch my jaws open to eat a sub, for example, my jaws seem to 'lock' open, and I have to focus on relaxing them to get them closed.

Does anyone know if this is documented elsewhere? I'm interested to know what causes this (obviously, it's opening my mouth too far, but you know...). Thanks!

You could have a condition known as TMJ/TMD. It's caused by several things, amongst them tooth misalignment. See below website for more info:

I have this too- it is TMJ disorder.
Get a bite splint, and take motrin for the pain.
It is caused by grinding your teeth while you are sleeping.
I was the worst case my doctor had ever seen.
When the joint locks, gently rub them, and then push down to release the joint.
TMJ stands for tempro mandibular joint.
Your splint will have to be adjusted for wear marks, by grinding the appliance. You will be fine, but need to get braces on your teeth to realign them, or wear the splint for life.
