I had my wisdom teeth extracted last Monday and am still in pain.?!

Question: On the fourth day I went back for a follow-up appointment and was still in a lot of pain so they put in medicated dressings on the lower extraction sites. I'm still in pain, not as much as days 3 and 4, but should I still be in pain a week later? Do I have a dry socket? I did ask the surgeon at the appointment and all he said was, "a dry socket is just a diagnosis". So basically I don't know if I have one or not?

Call the dentist first thing in the morning, and keep calling until they give you some more meds or ask you to come in and see them.

YOU paid good money for this procedure!
It's the Dentist's job to reassure you, help you, and keep you pain free.

Make a list of questions you want to ask the Dentisit.

take someone with you who will take notes and ask your questions if the dentist isn't hearing you.

PRIORITY: To Heal and Get out of Pain.
Ask:
1. how long to heal?
2.How deep were your roots.
(the deeper, the longer the healing time)
3.What is your new treatment plan from this day forward.
4.Is there anything you need to being differently to expedite the healing process?

ask your dental tech those questions, and get some pain meds, use your salt water gargle.
and be well!

i hope you get the dentist to see you frist thing in the am.
good luck!!
feel better fast!

It takes awhile for the pain to go away. Mine were sore for over a week later, just keep taking the pain pills and eat softer foods for awhile.

3 days and still pain sounds like dry socket if your a smoker try rinsing your mouth out after smoking or gargling warm salt water. sounds like the diagnosis is ur dentist is less than worried about it medicated padding?

i was told a dry socket was when the nerve endings were exposed after the "scab" had fallen off...I was in pain for a week, the surgeon was amazed I was able to function at all...

Trust me, they will definitely be sore for a while...

go ahead and talk with your dentist about the pain to be on the safe side. after i had dental surgery i was getting worried after the second week of constant pain. now its been a year and my teeth and gums are literally better now than when i was a kid. the pain was worth the effort.

I had difficulty with my wisdom teeth as well, and my surgeon used the medicated dressings. You SHOULD NOT be feeling anything in those lower extraction sites if the dressings are still in. Granted, you will feel pain/soreness over the next month or so. Mine took months to fully heal up, but with the dressings you should feel nothing at all.

I recommend that you make an appointment to follow up with the surgeon. In the meantime the most important thing is to keep the sockets clean, I wouldn't gargle with salt water because I was told it can cause dry socket and loosen blood clots. Don't eat any food that has something tiny that can be caught in the sockets (i.e. rice or broccoli). Just keep your mouth, and the sockets especially, as clean as possible for the next few months and that will aid tremendously in the healing process.

Good luck!
