Is it really true that the braces can come off sooner than planned?!

Question:

Is it really true that the braces can come off sooner than planned?

I just got braces about a week ago and my orthodontist said that if I practise proper oral hygiene, they will come off sooner. Is this true or is my orthodontist lying to me...lol.

Answers:

It's true. Teeth don't have a schedule, and your orthodontist can really only give a good estimate as to how long your braces should be on your teeth. But don't expect to get them off a YEAR early or anything like that-- it's probably more like a month or two earlier than planned.

THAT SAID-- did you orthodontist tell you they can STAY on longer if you're not careful with what you eat and you're not good about brushing and flossing?

If you really want to get them off early, here's what you do:

--Brush and floss EVERY DAY.

--Make sure you see your orthodontist whenever he/she recommends it..

--If you're given headgear, WEAR IT. Same with rubber bands.

--Stay away from super sticky foods and hard foods; things like jolly ranchers, caramel apples, and corn nuts will cause some serious damage to your appliances, and damaged appliances = more time in braces.

--If you have a broken bracket or wire, call your orthodontist as soon as possible to see if they want you to come in right away; sometimes you're okay to wait until your next appointment, sometimes not. Best to ask them what you should do!

Good luck with your braces!
