Is gingivitis common in people with braces?!

Question: Yes, very common. It's very important to put more effort into brushing and flossing with braces on. With brackets on your teeth, there's alot more area for the plaque to "hide". You have to angle your toothbrush up toward the brackets to brush below them......angle toothbrush downwards to brush above the brackets.....and be sure to brush your gums also. Plaque really tends to form at the gumline and around where the brackets are cemented. If it's not brushed off properly, your gums will easily get gingivitis......and the plaque will cause decalcification around the brackets. (which could lead to cavities). Flossing is much harder with braces. Your orthodontist should advise you on some floss threaders or proxabrushes that will help to clean inbetween your teeth and under the arch wires. It's quite a challenge to keep from getting gingivitis when you have ortho. Be diligent in your oral hygiene, and use fluoride rinses found in the supermarket or pharmacy to prevent cavities around the brackets. Good luck.....hope this info helped.
